Woolworths NZ is starting work on opening up wholesale grocery supply, with other retailers or organisations who might be interested in buying from them encouraged to register their information online.
Following the Commerce Commission’s recommendations around wholesale, and the government’s further guidance, a separate and bespoke team has been set up to find out more about potential demand, establish new processes and systems, and start conversations with suppliers around meeting the government’s objectives for more access to wholesale goods and prices.
Spencer Sonn, Woolworths NZ’s Managing Director, says they are committed to being part of a more competitive grocery market for Aotearoa, and while the business could supply a small number of retail customers in a B2B capacity, large-scale wholesale supply needs a different approach and mindset.
“We don’t yet have the capability to offer large scale wholesale supply, and it’s certainly not just a quick flick of the switch for us. It needs systems, investment and of course, customer demand. But we’re getting things moving and that starts with listening and learning,” says Sonn.
“If you’re interested in buying food or groceries from us, we’re keen to hear more – whether you’re large or small, an established retailer, or looking to set up a new business or any other type of organisation for that matter. We need to really understand what demand there is – who you might be, what you might want, and how we might best meet your needs in the future.
“At the same time we need to work with our supplier partners around that potential demand and how we can all make this happen together,” he says.
“Our business is working hard to embed the Commission’s recommendations and we’re determined to show New Zealanders that we are genuinely committed to supporting change,” says Sonn.
