Chocolate Dreams top 5 finalists revealed

Pavlova Lova, Campfire Delight, Buccaneer Brittle, Huntzels and Orange Moustachio are the Top Five finalists in Wellington Chocolate Factory’s Chocolate Dreams Competition.

Chocolate Dreams gives Kiwi children aged 5 to 13 the chance to create, design and bring to life their unique chocolate flavour and wrapper, which will be made and sold by the award-winning chocolatiers just in time for Christmas. Around 2,000 kids entered the competition.

More than 4,500 people voted in for their Top Five finalists. The imaginative creations will now be made into small batches for the Wellington Chocolate Factory’s (WCF) Judging Panel to taste at a special event later this month, hosted at WCF.

Gabe Davidson, Founder of WCF and Head Judge, says the judges have a tough job ahead as each of the flavours, and the artworks, are of an incredibly high standard.

“What’s stood out to me is the time each of our Finalists has spent creating their dream bar, and the artwork for the wrapper. Any one of those could be a limited-edition bar. I’m looking forward to tasting each of these flavours, but it’s going to be difficult to choose our winner,” says Gabe Davidson.

Gabe Davidson called each of the Top 5 finalists yesterday, to let them know they had made it through to the next round. You can view the video here.

“It was so special, and a real highlight of 2020, to call and let each of our aspiring Chocolatiers know they had made it through to the final round.  One of the reasons we launched Chocolate Dreams was to give kids a distraction during the COVID-19 response, but it’s also lifted the spirits of our entire team,” says Gabe Davidson.

Judging will take place on Thursday 30 July. The Panel includes Wellington identities:

  • Steve Logan, Wellington institution and Co-Founder of Logan Brown
  • Callum Davies, Founder of HELL
  • Gina Kiel, the artist behind some of WCF’s renowned artwork
  • Anna Calver-Smith, General Manager, Marketing & Communications WellingtonNZ
  • Kalliana Kong, Co-Founder of leading Wellington Foodie Instagram, Wellingnoms
  • Luke Owen Smith, Master Chocolate lover from the Chocolate Bar

The overall winner of Chocolate Dreams, and their family, will win a weekend in Wellington. They will visit the Factory, watch their creation be made and wrap the first bar produced.  Thanks to WellingtonNZ, the winner and their family will experience the best of the Capital with a weekend full of activities, including; two night’s accommodation, a family pass to Wellington Zoo, a day tour at ZEALANDIA and a Weta Cave Workshop Tour & Miniature Effects Tour at Weta Workshop.
