New hot cross bun collab hits South Island New World shelves

New World stores across South Island have partnered with Lotus Biscoff to bring another new flavour to hot cross bun lovers this Easter.

The cinnamon and sweet Biscoff Hot Cross Bun was designed by award-winning bakery manager at New World, Kaikoura, Steven Ogden, and his latest delicious flavour is now available in New World stores across the South Island.

Steve is no stranger to creating hot cross bun wonderment. He started baking 30 years ago while still at school and is now two-time winner of the annual Foodstuffs South Island Hot Cross Bun competition.

Steve jumped at the opportunity again this year, of being involved in the competition. New World stores in South Island and their respective in-house bakeries get the chance to be creative by submitting their hot cross bun creations. The winning hot cross bun is then re-created across all New World bakeries in the South Island.

The distinctive Biscoff flavour was already front of mind for Steve when he began his winning creation. He ran a trial batch using Biscoff and happy with his result, entered the competition.

“At the start of last year my daughter introduced me to Lotus Biscoff biscuits and spreads, from then on I was pretty much addicted to the flavour. I was excited to experiment with different textures by adding the biscuits through the hot cross buns to complement the distinctive Biscoff flavour. So far, the Biscoff hot cross buns seem to be pretty popular and have been selling fast – whenever we run out, people come in and ask when we’ll get more onto shelves”.

New World Kaikoura is well known for its impressive bakery department and newly appointed store owner, James Bishop couldn’t be prouder, “My wife and I have recently become the owners of New World Kaikoura and it’s exciting and inspiring to see the passion and commitment from the teams here, especially Steve and his crew who start work every day at 4am to create and turn out new and fresh baked goods for the people in our community”.

New World and Lotus Biscoff have a reasonably new relationship, with their Lotus Biscoff biscuits and spread being introduced nationally across New World stores in 2020.

So hop to it and try the new sweet and cinnamony delectable buns, available in-store and online in South Island New World stores for a limited time only, while stocks last.
