M&M’s are a well-known confectionery product, but they’ll come with a decadent new twist next year.
For the first time in 75 years, the brand will experiment with a soft caramel filling – Mars has announced they’re adding a new caramel centre to their sweet treats.
According to CNN, the new initiative represents one of the biggest developments in the brand’s history. Hank Izzo, Vice President of Research & Development at Mars Chocolate, told CNN: “Caramel is extremely trendy. It’s a $2.2 billion flavour segment and the fastest growing segment in food right now. We want to be part of this category.”
The new product has apparently taken a few years to develop — getting the balance between the soft middle and the outer coating of the candy (called the ‘lentil’), took a process of trial and error. The manufacturing set-up still needs to be finalised, but the commercial release of the product is expected around May 2017.
