KitKat’s “global first” packaging trial in Australia

Customers at Coles supermarkets across WA, SA, and the NT will be the first in the world to sample KitKat’s innovative paper packaging.

In an exclusive trial with Coles, over a quarter of a million KitKat four-finger 45g chocolate bars will be available for consumers to purchase for a limited time.

Customers will also be able to provide feedback on the packaging by scanning a QR code on the bar and answering a set of questions.

Chris O’Donnell, Nestlé Oceania General Manager of Confectionery and Snacks, said they are proud to be the first country globally to trial KitKat in paper packaging and it is an important step towards reducing virgin plastic use.

“Our partnership with Coles has made this packaging trial a possibility, where Aussie chocolate lovers can have their say on our innovative KitKat packaging. The feedback we receive on this trial will help shape the next step of giving Aussies their favourite break.”

The paper packaging trial is a positive step for Nestlé, which has set a goal of reducing its use of virgin plastics by a third by 2025, which includes using less plastic, recycled plastic, and alternatives to plastic packaging.

Leanne White, General Manager of Grocery at Coles, said Coles is thrilled to partner with Nestlé on this trial.

“As part of Coles’ Together to Zero waste ambition, we are committed to reducing plastic packaging wherever possible in Coles supermarkets so we’re really proud to work with fantastic suppliers like Nestlé to trial a new packaging solution for one of Aussies’ favourite chocolate bar.”
