Who are the happiest and healthiest New Zealanders?

Already more than 31,500 Kiwis have taken the Choose Wellness Quiz since the end of October last year and older participants have come out on top.

The Nestlé Choose Wellness Quiz gives a score of up to 100 based on happiness, diet, exercise, health behaviours, sleep and social interaction. For people aged 70 or older the average wellness score is a spectacular 70, compared with the average adult scoring 63. The youngest respondents (<40 years) scored 58-59 – more than 10 points less than the oldest. However, scores got progressively better as people got older: 45-49 years scored 61, 55-59 years scored 65, and 65-69 years scored 69.

So what’s their secret? Hip Op-eration Crew, ‘the world’s oldest dance group’ (Guinness World record holder 2014) knows a thing or two about making the most of your twilight years.

Snoop J (John, 80) and Leila G (Leila, 71); say “having free time and being able to be yourself” are some advantages. DD Bugz (Dianne, 68) says that “it’s true youth is wasted on the young” but, what makes her happy now – meeting new people and being part of something – made her happy in her youth too.

And if they could go back in time? DD would love to be a young person today. “There are so many exciting opportunities we never had!”

As for how the Hip Op-eration crew stay healthy, they say being active and eating sensibly is very important, but treating yourself now and then is too.

The Nestlé Choose Wellness initiative aims to help people lead healthy, active lives. The Wellness Quiz is designed to be fun, thought provoking and give people a starting point for healthy and achievable change.

As the next step, Nestlé is proudly launching the Nestlé Choose Wellness Roadshow series in Westfield centres across the country. Nestlé will be joined there by a range of guest speakers. The event is sure to be entertaining and informative for the whole family and will include the opportunity to meet some of NZ’s top sports stars, ask qualified nutritionists your burning nutrition questions, and expert advice on healthy eating, skin care and pet care.
