New World Remuera store owner, Adrian Barkla, is one of Auckland’s local food heroes. He is championing organic produce, supporting small producers and will be stocking only cage-free eggs at his New World store.

This year has seen more traction in animal welfare advocates pushing for cage-free eggs and Barkla sees this as the right time to make the move to eliminate eggs from caged hens completely from his store – news his customers are thrilled with.

Meanwhile, Aldi has also vowed to stop selling ‘cage eggs’ at its supermarkets in Australia. In a post on social media, the retailer has just announced: “Aldi has a strong obligation to its customers, suppliers and the wider community to deliver great value products responsibly. We’ve listened to our customers and we are committed to working with our suppliers towards transitioning to 100% cage-free eggs by no later than 2025. Moving to cage-free eggs is a complex process and requires a significant investment for this to be achieved. To achieve our goal, we are working with our suppliers to safeguard a sustainable transition. We believe the best outcome for everyone is when the transition is done co-operatively and collaboratively with the industry, customers and other relevant parties. We will continue to offer a range of cage free eggs at affordable prices every day.”
