New World Fendalton transformed

New World Fendalton has emerged transformed with the completion of the supermarket’s extensive revamp.

After an 18-month refurbishment and a significant expansion, the supermarket’s size has increased by 500 square metres with aisle space and number of checkouts boosted, and the number of products and ranges on offer expanded.

Other highlights and new features also include an ecostore refillery for those customers looking to reduce packaging and waste, as well as the installation of a new butchery counter.

The upgrade has seen a complete re-design of the building incorporating large windows to allow natural light in, as well as sustainability-innovations – a light harvesting system to reduce electricity used by the store, and new energy-saving refrigeration – all contributing to a reduced carbon footprint for the store.

New World Fendalton is currently owned and operated by brothers James and Richard Turner. The brothers are third generation owners and are delighted to be able to finally share with customers the elevated shopping experience that they have longed planned for.

“It really has been a team effort, and to see our community enjoy the refurbished store has been incredibly rewarding. It brings together the hard work of so many people – the commitment displayed by our staff and the wider community has been instrumental in bringing our plans to life,” says James.

Family legacy

New World Fendalton is strong in family history with James and Richard’s great grandfather Walter Turner immigrating to Christchurch when he was just 14-years old. It was here that he secured a job in a local grocery store and fell in love with the industry. Walter’s son, Jim, having grown up in grocery, took over the store in 1961 and owned it up until his death in 2016. Part of Fendalton Mall, the store has been owned by the Turner Family since 1936 – from 1936 to 1970 the store was Turner’s Grocers, and from then on New World Fendalton.

James and Richard are carrying on the family legacy, continuing to be a mainstay of New Zealand’s grocery collective, but also an integral cornerstone of the local western Christchurch community.

Richard believes that their great-Grandfather Walter and Grandfather Jim, would be proud of the supermarket’s evolution and continuation of its characteristic family business charm.

“Supermarkets have changed a lot since the business opened back in thirties, and I think the changes we have made will ensure we continue to provide a top-class shopping experience for decades to come, just like our great grandfather and grandfather did before us,” says Richard.

New World Fendalton is located at 19-23 Memorial Avenue in Christchurch. The store is open every day from 7.30am to 9pm.
