Lion shares sustainability update

Lion has published its 2024 Sustainability Performance Update – showing substantial steps forward in its Force for Good strategy and highlighting the incredible power of industry collaboration in driving sustainability progress.

Lion New Zealand contributed a number of key highlights:

  • Installed one of New Zealand’s largest rooftop solar arrays at The Pride brewery, generating 14.4% of its annual electricity needs.
  • Relaunched a mobile-first website for its renowned Alcohol&Me programme, which has helped to educate 763,000+ New Zealanders on making smarter drinking choices since its inception.
  • Expanded Healthy Hospo through a major partnership with Hospitality New Zealand, reaching over 3,000 hospitality professionals with health and well-being support through workshops and community events.
  • Helped to protect native fauna through Emerson’s support of the Hoiho (Yellow-eyed penguin), which won Bird of the Year 2024.
  • Continued strong environmental performance – achieving 73.3% recycled content in our containers (a 10% increase on last year), remaining 99.2% recyclable, while further improving water efficiency.
  • Lion NZ team members spent 3,447 hours volunteering for great causes in the community.

Lion New Zealand Managing Director, Craig Baldie, said: “2024 was another important year in our sustainability journey and we’re delighted to report the strong progress made by our teams across New Zealand.

“We’re taking great steps forward in our environmental agenda and as a business born, bred, and brewed in New Zealand, we’re proud to continue to make such a significant contribution to local communities nationwide.

“None of this can be delivered without the support of our suppliers, customers and the broader community, and we thank them for their continued partnership,” said Craig.

Lion Group Sustainability Director, Justin Merrell, said: “As we go ever deeper into our sustainability journey, we recognise there are limits to what we can achieve alone and opportunities to influence the behaviour of others will be key to drive even greater impact.”

“2024 was a pivotal year when we proved the power of collaboration like never before and it will be central to our sustainability strategy from 2025 onwards,” said Justin.
